When Dumb-Unit originally released this recording in 2001 (before they joined with Kompakt) they felt it did not receive the attention it deserved because of a misunderstanding with distribution. Now, almost a decade later, Dumb-Unit has rereleased Mark and Matt Thibideau's influential Black Line Display EP. Now, this sought after gem can safely make its way into the collection of the masses.

Black Line Display presents a solid audio image. While each track has its own individual qualities, the presentation of the EP is one cohesive concept. The title track is the embodiment of this image. It starts with the techno four-on-the-floor kick, with detuned electric pianos dreamily panning through filtered jazz chords. Soon, hi-hats define the upbeat and cue the snares on two and four. This is the basic framework, this is the zero. From here, Repair builds with distant singing synths and funky bass lines. Vocal percussion sounds are intricately sequenced in ever changing and tempo pushing accents. The peaks are discrete, brief moments of crescendo and small drops mark the groove as the loops sublime into beautiful pressures.

If you are in search of that deep kind of tech-house with cerebral builds and heavy kick drums, this is a must for your DJ crate.
