Hot on the heels of his excellent album "Entropic City", Belgian producer Peter Van Hoesen drops a slab of grinding techno that's heavy without being too oppressive.

"Irrational X" is 'minimal techno' in the vein of Robert Hood and Wolfgang Voigt's Studio One. The pursuit of perfect repetition is a nearly alchemical endeavor, for when there are so few elements in a track they must be totally harmonious. Hoesen works with heavy materials, yet the movement is always forward and never downwards. "Irrational X" is propulsive, with ghosts of a
motorikpulse in plain sight.

"Irrational X (Slowmix)" is heaving, disorienting piece of pitch black psychedelia. This track would be both frightening and liberating in a club context, listening to it instantly conjured visions of invertebrate inspired dance moves. Hoesen expertly contrasts a warm low end with lightning strike highs.

Berlin duo Exercise One's remix of "Irrational X" is less of a slow burn than Hoesen's versions. The percussive sounds in this dubby rising track slap especially hard and the remix would be easier to integrate into a set that straddled house and techno then Hoesen's more purist creations.

Peter Van Hoesen is setting the bar very high, "Irrational X" is an essential release for fans of artfully dark techno.
