Artist: Joy Orbison Title: The Shrew Would Have Cushioned The Blow EP Label: Aus Music, UK. Cat#: AUS1026 Genre: Dubstep/House/Funky/Garage Format: All Release Date: February 22, 2010 Rating: 7 When I heard Hyph Mngo / Wet Look last year I freaked out. Travis Korte was over and I turned it on; we both agreed that Joy Orbison had made something brilliant. I listened to this record non-stop for days: Orbison had combined elements from dub-step, house, techno and garage into a sound that was pop! This new music was innovative, but it was also fun. The drum programming and synthesis, combined with clear and spacious mixing eventually made this new release a favorite for everyone. So naturally I was excited when I learned that Joy Orbison had a release coming up and I was privileged with writing a review. But, when I first heard The Shrew, I was disappointed. It’s still Orbison, it definitely picks up from where Hyph Mngo left us, but it doesn’t take me anywhere new. Just know that it is a great EP. You should definitely get this. But, I wanted more. Joy Orbison showed me something magical with that first release. His ideas and technical ability make this single worth it. The title track starts with clicking hi hats and a bouncing three to two kick. The layers build as the soft sine tone pads get a more complex texture, claps drop and a drifting melody filters in and out. Finally the deep bass starts playing a melody. With these components Orbison creates tension with swells and drops in volume and percussions. It is solid from start to finish. But, nothing jaw dropping. “So Derobe” is my pick. There are moments of distortion and reverb that take me out of the club and show me an experimental space. These snippets in the breaks are what I was hoping for more of. I’m happy to hear that Joy Orbison can deliver consistent material, but I hope that he keeps innovating and experimenting the way his music proves he’s capable. -Non Curo Tracks: A1) The Shrew Would Have Cushioned The Blow A2) So Derobe B) The Shrew Would Have Cushioned The Blow (Actress' Neu Haus Slo Go Mix)
