Minimono Interview

Minimono was born in Florence in 1997 as a multimedia project that eveloved into by experimenting with different types of art; namely music installation, graphic design, and theatre performances. The collaboration between dj Fabio della Torre and the electronic producer Ennio Colaci started in 2004 with the intent of melting the musical experiences of both into fresh minimal techno productions with an oldschool house feeling.

-How does your love for disco, funk and jazz translate into your Live / DJ sets? Do you use re-edits of old tracks or do you prefer to achieve the feeling of that music using techno and house tracks?

Music in general has always been our primal source of inspiration of course, both production-wise and in DJ sets. We've always felt that 70s funk and soul as well as many electronic productions from early Pepe Bradock stuff to Mathew Herbert, just to name a couple, are the main conductors who always influenced our stuff, both in the use of samples and in the groove construction. We are not 100% for real re-edits of tracks, even though we have done one for this podcast ;)

The goal for us is to make new tracks and give a certain feeling, without using a "massively recognizable" sample. But of course we still appreciate certain very well done re-edits too, especially some reworks from Master Todd Terje, or some really cool stuff coming from the UK scottish scene..

-How do you balance DJing, production and running Bosconi Records?

Well this is something that comes kind of natural in this historical moment.. our live set, the DJ set and the sound we bring with Bosconi records and her little sister Bosconi Extra Virgin, all of them coexist together in letting us express all facets of electronic dance music and what both electronic music and production mean to us. There is not one gender, there is not one style, there is not something that is encoded. Music is timeless if it's good and has a good purpose!!
So all we do for Minimono live set or for Fabio della Torre DJ set or for the labels has the same purpose and the same goal until we'll keep have the same passion for music, which moves our soul and our legs ;)

-Who are some up and coming Italian DJs and producers that deserve more international recognition?

Well we' re really happy that some of the Italian artists who released on Bosconi records already got a good international reputation, I'm talking about producers like Alex Picone (Cadenza), Ilario Alicante (Cocoon), Mass Prod (Circoloco) and also Riccio, with his famous disco edit project super value! Bosconi is pretty much an Italian thing even though we released also international artists  such as Bruno Pronsato, The Revenge, P&D (Phil Weeks & Didier Alline), Rondenion, Jaffa Surfa, Crowdpleaser, john Thomas, 100hz...

For sure there are some acts coming from italy we think deserve more visibility, for example:
DJ Rufus from Florence, who appears in several releases on Bosconi and is also collaborating as a&r for Bosconi Extra Virgin. He is a good example of a very talented DJ with really nice taste in music, always searching for and exploring new styles and grooves!  And also The amazing tech funk trio The Clover, so young but so mature and rich with original and colorful ideas - thanks to the add of real bass and real funk elements!

-Where and how did you record the mix? Is there anything you want to say about your mix for FWD?

Well we actually wanted to use for this podcast a nice live set recorded during a Bosconi label night at Weekend club Berlin, but somehow we never managed to get this recording.. this is when you say someone is really lazy!!

So after waiting a couple weeks we thought about recording a brand new set on purpose for FWD, and for the occasion we also insert this new edit we did from Parliament. This set we recorded is a very funky and solar one, good for the summer vibe.  We've put mostly tracks and loops we used for releases on Bosconi, Oslo and Tuningspork, as well as some forthcoming stuff, hope you enjoy it.. Everyhing is produced from us!

-What's the scene like in Florence? How does it compare to other scenes around the globe?

Florence is not a really big city, but since the 80s it has been a great pole of cultural phenomenons, maybe now a little less than in the past years, but it still is a good environment for creativity, a city with a good size, geographically in the center of Italy - pretty uncontaminated and original!

The scene is good, there are underground clubs as well as one of the biggest electronic realities in Italy, that is legendary Tenax club Florence, open for about 30 years! We wouldn't know how to compare it with other scenes. We can only say that there are a lot of people truly interested by dance music and that this interest makes all of us pretty united and open to the exchange of ideas.. This probably helps us to become more aware and open to everything that is happening around the globe!!

-Where's your favorite place to party and where do you think the scene will be really special this year?

Hard to say where our favorite place to party is.. We really like the south of Italy, it is pretty uncontaminated and everything is really cheap, and the food is incredible :)!! During summer time there are a lot of amazing parties on the beach as well as open air festivals. Playing around we had the occasion to visit several locations in North and South America; we really enjoyed South America, it is really nice and people there have a good vibe.. Ibiza is also cool, Germany and Switzerland are not news in terms of quality clubbing
:)
To be honest, and not because we are Italian, we might believe Italy could really be the next place to be.. The whole scene is making some nice steps, from understanding we have a good potential inside our country we didn't lose after the 80s italo disco or the 90s house,
that we're mediterranean, and we can give a certain touch to our productions, that we are united again and we can grow all together still being positively influenced from what comes from abroad, but not believing too much in myths anymore, that have certainly brought business but not too much quality to our clubbing scene..We're really happy about ED.IT Festival, the forthcoming and first Italian label meeting happening in Venice the first week in June, this can definately be a good base!

-What does 2010 hold for Minimono? Tell us what you're up to this year!

We just released a new EP on Bosconi records, "Dreamworld EP," a kind of nice continuation of the previous one, "Let Me Wonder." It's a pretty melodic record, all the 3 tracks are really rich in samples, melodies and groove elements.. We can say we didn't spare on this one :)

The future is bright, the future is funk! We are currently working on our first album, to be eventually released next winter. For this project we've been featured by some musicians and singers because we really wanted to keep the musical imprint alive and try to challenge ourselves in something different.. We are also working hard for the labels where we are investing a lot of our time!  We would like it to be more and more recognized as an international label but with a good standard of music quality and variety..
That is why in the very near future we are also signing some interesting international acts with really nice dance as well as downtempo and forward-thinking music!!

So stay tuned.. And keep it Extra virgin!
